SOPA/PIPA

Post by Pestilencemage » January 19th, 2012, 12:19 am

SOPA is a bill proposal for the house of representitives. "Stop Online Piracy Act"
PIPA is a similur bill proposal for the Senate. "Protect Intellectual Property Act"

Basicly, they are trying to stop the piracy and copyright infringement that currently runs rampant and essentualy unchecked via the internet. One of the problems with inforceing laws that the bills attempt to fix is that several of the offending sites are overseas and behond our jurisdiction. This bill would make it possable to act agenst such sites by pressureing service providers and search engines to completely block access to sites that "Facilitate piracy and copyright infringement". It is worded loosely for a reason, I call that reason "piratesbay". Pirates bay does not distribute copyright material, only torrent files... that are nearly all used to download pirated games, movies, and software. TECHNICLY they are not distributeing copyright materials, but they are the very epitome of facilitateing piracy. Being overseas there is currently nothing at all we can do about that site. This bill offers the ability to enforce control over such sites. Piratesbay would be blocked from the internet in the US. This is what the bill is designed to do.

Unfortunately, due to the open ended wording, several other sites COULD be consitered to facilitate piracy. If Midi posted a LINK to a video on this forum that had more then 30sec. of Justin Beiber song in it, that would technicly qualify maxloader.nl/forum to be blocked from the USA Internet. That is not really how it works... SOMEONE has to report a violation, but just a report makes it illegal to gain ad money (thats basicly how the pressure works, hit them on the finace side), and Google would block maxloader.nl from it's search engine for sure. The rest is actualy dependant apon many different factors. Enforcement is a damn puzzle in itself.

THE PROBLEM: This bill will be entirely ineffective! Even after Piratebay was blocked, we could simply access proxy servers overseas to connect to piratebay. USA would be forced to shut down access to all out of country PROXY servers as they would be facilitateing piracy... Eventualy someone would copy Piratebay directly over and name it Puratebay... that site would operate for awhile before being blocked and renamed Pooratebay... This is how we did it back in the old days with AOL private chat servers: Wares became Warez became Wairs became Wairz. This is NOT an effective way of preventing piracy. Pirates are smarter then that, and far more effective at implementing plans. DRM ridden games are relieced before their reliece dates on a regular basis. This will only hert those who are NOT doing illegal activities.

THE INTERNET DOES NOT COMMIT CRIMES
stop blameing inatimate objects for the criminal activities of people.
It's like passing a law where all store goods MUST be behind the counter, out of reach of any and all customers... or your store is shut down for facilitateing shoplifting.

Another reason this bill is so ineffective is because it's the URLs that end up getting blocked, not the IPs. Say the Pirates bay does end up getting blocked by every search engine, and has its URL removed. All you would have to do to access their site would be to put their IP address into your URL bar. That is, of course, assuming they'd be willing to release their IP address as that does come with certain risks itself.
The soap, pick it up.

The IP Address of thepiratebay.org is 194.71.107.15
The IP Address of maxloader.nl is 193.202.110.191

So you guys know, IP addresses are NOT secret information. Everyone keeps guarding their IP like it is some secret code, but they give it to EVERY site they visit, that is how the internet works. URLs are just a registration of your IP address to make it something more noteable.
It's like saying My phone number is 1-800-Call Sam (Thats a crappy law firm) and then guarding the actual digits of the phone number. It is just as simple to figure out your IP address from your URL as it is to find the digits of Call Sam.
Bring up a dos prompt (Startmenu->Run "CMD") type nslookup and press enter.
type in the URL, and press enter... you will get the IP for any URL.

Unfortunately, if all US Service providers block a site, it WILL have authority to deny access to the IP of the offending party. This can quickly get out of hand with reguards to dynamic IPs. They control the backbone of the internet as we know it.

I think it's ironic that we flame North Korea/China/other Asian countries for censoring the internets.

Then, Congress attempts to pass a bill that essentially censors the internet.

so, SOPA and PIPA have been "Delayed".
This most likely means that they will be rewording things and trying to get one they can slip past the public eye. Hopefully they wont sneak the new version as an addendum to some other bill like LNRB (Lets Not Rape Babies) bill.

Seems Megaupload was shut down and several arrests made overseas in a MASSIVE racketeering and money-laundering case. I see this as a reason NOT to enact SOPA/PIPA as we seem capable of this without their assistance. New Zealand police made the arrests.

In retaliation, Several dumb kids who only oppose SOPA/PIPA becuase they believe it will interfear with their Pirateing (and masterbateing to the movie twilight) "Anonymous" attacked some record company sites (shut them down for about an hour) and also some public FBI and Justice Department websites for afew hours.

...Damn you dumbass kids, I'm sure the government is going to block SOPA/PIPA because they are deathly afrade of the horrable retaliation of haveing their public site shut down again... They would half to call up that webmaster guy again and have him fix it for them... AGAIN. What a nightmare. We all know that in the face of threats, the US Goverment has a history of running away (IE Pearl Harbor & 9/11) expecialy when the opposition is much smaller, and criminal activity ALWAYSE suggests that less laws should be passed.

Hmmm all the things in red point towards Mid.

And in all seriousness, I agree with your point of view on the bills. The bills support good, honest goals but they don't have the means to correctly fulfill those goals, or at least are not using those means.

yup, midi alright!

Adding horrable ineffective means (+stiffleing our freedoms in the process) to the means that we don't use (but seem to be just as effective at the proposed means).

I just hate when hackers and pirates are all "lets take a stand!" because their voice does NOT help the cause, it just shows how many criminals their are out there and makes good honest ignorant folk want to pass more laws to try to stop them, even if it cost them some of their freedom. Old ignorant folk are more afrade of outspoken criminals then they are of the government slowly squeezeing their freedoms, EXPECIALY if the spacific freedom they are currently squeezeing is not one they exercise... Actualy after the smokeing bans, I'm not sure anyone cares to preserve freedoms they dont exorcise anymore.

I dont want to have buttsex with seven men in my basement, but I would like the freedom to have buttsex with seven men in my basement should the mood arise and/or my opinion about desire for buttsex with seven men in my basement should reverse in the future however unlikely I may currently think that event. I am therefore opposed to any law (past, present, or future) that forbids haveing buttsex with seven men in my basement...... er... one's own basement? No buttsex in *MY* basement without my express permission! I suppose that breaks other existing laws though, so we don't need additional laws on that.

Yeah, now all their support's going into ACTA. now don't start a panic about this one please, I haven't read up on it enough to really know what it will do yet. but I've heard bad things about it. I think it might deserve peoples attention as well, but hopefully in a more calm manner this time.

SIGNUPS!

I don't think they released the actual text of ACTA. They had some "leaked" info on it from drafts, but you cant really trust that.
Basicly ACTA is a proposed international treaty on counterfitting goods and properties (cuz we need 3000 laws on every issue). One of the problems is that it will have a small commitee that decides changes without any review and it is supposed to violate current freedoms and allow unjust prying into our affairs.
Really difficult to know what is really in the treaty but at the same time, impossable to support it due to WHY we have no true info on ACTA. ALL governments that have the current ACTA draft are refuseing to publish it. USA had denied clames to the Freedom Of Information Act stateing that ACTA is a matter of national security. yeaahhhh, the national security of the distribution rights for twilight movies. Best keep that info safe.

this wiki article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-Count ... _Agreement) has links to released text of ACTA. I'm not gonna lie I, much like our politicians, am too lazy to read legal documents. Fortunately it's not my job. But I've been told there's stuff in there about making ISPs check the downloads and uploads of their clients. Maybe it's true, probably it isn't but the text was released in 2010 according to wiki.
