Now they're possible to kill, it's impossible to kill them with bows, as they seem to deflect arrows, and the only place where you can hit them is the head.
The way to kill them is if they lunge at you, you shouldn't move out of the way, but directly attack it in the head.
Rinse and repeat for 100 hearts, twice the health of a giant.
It doesn't seem to do any damage either, so it might get even harder later.

Sweet! I havent checked for information regarding 1.9, so I might be asking a slightly noobish question. Where did this fight occur? I dont recognize the environment.

It happened in "The End", a new 1.9 dimension.

Doesn't the "End" replace the farlands?

No, they are unrelated. The Far Lands were removed by , since they were caused by the way he had coded Minecraft pre-1.8. The End is a new dimension found through portals in 1.9 strongholds.

Oh well that clears it up. But one question remains, What caused to think up "The End"?

First, he made a sky dimension for no reason. He hid it.

Some random dude found the code and made a mod that allowed you to access Notch's sky dimension.

PCGamer said "this is cool"

Notch said "I have to program this since PCGamer approves"

Notch made a vague statement about some cumulative end of minecraft, like the end of a plot, except you'd still be able to play on as it is a sandbox game.
