In the main menu of minecraft there's a button three down called mods and texturepacks. click on it. once you've done that look at the two buttons on the bottom of your screen. The one on the left will say open texturepacks folder. click on it. it will open a folder. take the zip file that you've downloaded from the texturepack site and drag it into that folder. close the folder. click on the new button in minecraft that has the name of the texture pack on it. you've now installed a texture pack on any OS.
The soap, pick it up.

First download at patch your minecraft game to accept HD Textures with MCPatcher.
http://cloud.github.com/downloads/pclew ... 1.0_02.exe

Download texture packs (like mine, based mostly off of the John Smith texture pack 32x32) and place them in the texture pack folder as discribed above.
Path for the texture pack folder is Appdata/Roaming/.minecraft/texturepacks

My texture pack is:
http://www.2shared.com/file/wTob2LCD/PestPack32.html

DO NOT UNZIP the texture packs. The file put into the texture pack folder should be ONE .zip file for each pack.
