betrayed by my water

I was mining near lava and I got to close and caught fire so I ran away and dumped water on myself from my water bucket and the water completely disappeared leaving me to burn to death, I had a diamond pick, two buckets, and 8 obsidian. I would just go make another pick and more buckets and mine more obsidian without saying anything but this isn't the first time I've died this way and I'm almost out of diamonds and iron.

Hey, I know this is closed but I might be able to help with your problem. I've found that due to bugs you can sometimes pick up a bucket of water which isn't actually full. When you place the water down again the server dosn't agree and the water is removed.

Best way to stop this from happening is to check your buckets by putting the water down and picking it up again in a ditch. Just to check.

But you wouldn't check it first if you where in an emergency situation right?
btw, this was probably caused by a lag spike.
