Where did the snow and red flowers go?

Two observations I've made on the new map. No snow and no red flowers. Did they get removed from the game all together or is it a quirk with 1.8? Anyone know?

There are no snow biomes in 1.8 Beta, these will be in Minecraft 1.0, same with flowers

If you need flowers, you can turn bonemeal into flowers.
Step 1: make or find a 8x8 or so area of grass floor.
Step 2: make the area dark (optional)
Step 3: use bonemeal on the grass in the middle

Making the area dark is a bad idea if you don't want your grass to die. (This assuming the area is under a roof that is opaque.) Of course, it won't die right away, but in time it will.

I have a flower farm. The grass will not die.
