Whenever, I try to log in, I either get "Protocal error" or "End of Stream." What am I doing wrong?

Nothing. Keep trying. Its done that to me. If it keeps doing that, restart the game/browser.

I am not sure but it probably has something to do with

migrating minecraft.net (also handles name verification)
How i think what happens when you connect:
1. You enter your account name and pw (minecraft.net handles all that)
2. You press 'Multiplayer' and enter a server adress (FIRST minecraft.net verifies you havent spoofed your username/pass, then it passes on the connection to the adress you entered)
3. The connection arrives at the server and the server accepts it if its on the whitelist.
4. You maybe see "Downloading map" (this means its downloading the chunk you have to spawn in from the server)
5. You spawn in the spawn area and the rest loads up around you. (speed depending on the speed of your download speed and the server upload speed)
6. Play.
