Chunk regeneration

Ok, so... There's new minerals, new trees etc, but to get them om the server, we have to venture further away/cover new ground AKA generate new Chunks.

Now I have no problem with this, we explore the maps more, BUT! We also have a vast area of the map that we don't actually use.

My plan is this: IF there is an area of the current map that's not actually being used, can we select those chunks in an editor, delete them, and then restart the server. Players would venture to those areas again and the landscape will be the same (as the seed will be the same), BUT with the addition of new trees and potential minerals.

It might be about an hours work tops, but beats having to start a new map.

Thoughts?

Gaz, are you sure the chunks re-generate when deleted and replaced with air?
cuz technically air blocks are blocks too and empty chunks are made of nothing.

On my single player game, I used mcedit and deleted all the chunks (not deleted blocks to air) around my main area and spawn. Upon reloading the game, those chunks were regenerated and now contained new trees and the blue mineral. The landscape was the same, as much as I could tell anyway.

All the edges matched up, and I had birches :-D places I had explored were also the same, with some minor differences, such as the tree locations. The seed that's used for the world is the same, so the generation matchs perfectly.

Anywhere where nothing is built maybe? What about previous mines? Will they stay?

Anyway, be careful west from spawn and all the way to the edge of the map, since that's where I've built my tunnel. Don't want to dig that thing again :)

Once at work (about to get the train) I'll highlight areas I think are safe, we can then review it and go from there :)

Ouch. It's ok beaver. I will build you a new dam.

But I don't want a new dam (I never had one, bears do not make dams)... If you want to re-dig my tunnel so I can get back to my awesome spot, however, feel free >.>

Can I at least get my stuff reimbursed?
6 Diamonds, 5 Lapis Lazuli, 3 stacks of clay Blocks, 1 stack of glass, 1 stack of iron and around a double chest of cobble?
There was probably more, but I guess those are the most important...

The chunks in the upper left corner will get deleted again, this is probably because someone spawned there.

Yay for treehouse!
This was a great idea but one little question, if our vault happened to be outside of this red area..
does that mean all our valuables are gone? or still there :p

To be fair, I did post after Gazoid suggested the changes, though I guess I could have been more specific:
Airship wrote:Anyway, be careful west from spawn and all the way to the edge of the map, since that's where I've built my tunnel. Don't want to dig that thing again :)
The next day I was catching up with some sleep, so I didn't get the chance to see the map Gazoid drew up (Or the edited map you drew up) before you had gone through with the changes. From the time Gaz drew the first map until you had nuked everything was, btw, less than 12 hours (11:01 AM - 9:57 PM January 17th according to my time). Imo, would have been nice with a bit longer time to let people see how the map would change (as this was only a suggestion thread when I saw it), before nuking everything.

Anyway, I guess I'm ranting, sorry. I can rebuild.

Ehn, that's okay. It's probably not a good idea to go that far away from the rest of the server now that the new stuff can be found that much closer anyway... Thanks though :)

Apparently Ravn can do some gaming today as well, so I guess we can finally start our new project!
